How to Use Facebook Timeline

facebook timelineOne of my team members asked me how to use Facebook Timeline the other day, so I thought I would do a quick post about it.

So is your fan page Timeline ready? – I mean do you know how to use Facebook Timeline to continue making leads and sales?

On 30th March Facebook went over to the new Facebook Timeline and the masses were saying this was the end of free marketing on Facebook because (incase you hadn’t noticed) you can’t direct new visitors on your Facebook fan page to a selected landing page any more.

Others have been saying that this is just a ploy by Facebook to get more revenue as you will have to resort to Facebook PPC (pay per click)  advertising to drive traffic to your landing tabs and even when you’ve done that, you can only display 3 landing tabs!

Others still, have been saying that Facebook is becoming a place for large brands only and they are damaging the small marketer.

So what does it all mean for the small business marketer and how much of the whisperings and concerns are actually legitimate concerns?

How should we be using Facebook Timeline?

Well I don’t have all the answers, but I have been watching and listening for a while.  Indeed I didn’t even go over to Facebook Timeline until the night before it became essential to do so, but here’s what I can tell you.

The top social media marketers who spend thousands of dollars on split testing and marketing on Facebook seem to love it.  Brian Moran of “Get 10,000 Likes”  (which actually turned into over 85,000 Likes!) reported a 52% increase in sales from the new Timeline layout, so what is the secret of how to use Facebook Timeline Fan pages to improve your optins and sales?

Is it learning how to get more likes for your Facebook page?

NO!  – This is not what it’s all about.

It’s about story telling!

Yes, story telling is the way to sell or generate leads on your Facebook Timeline fan page.

Facebook Timeline is now separating out the good marketers from the bad because now you have to know how to get your fans or visitors over to your custom landing pages.  And you do this through telling stories about your journey or the milestones in your business.

Firstly you need to choose a good cover image which is a LOT bigger than before, (minimum of 850 pixels x 315)  but make sure you follow Facebook’s strict guidelines about what you can and can’t do – Click here to see the full Facebook Timeline fan page Guidelines

Then you will need to re-order your tabs (which are now called apps) and give your apps a bright and enticing picture with a clear call to action.  You are allowed 12, but only 4 are on display and the first one is always photos, so you just need to re-order the next ones to showcase your welcome page or offer pages.

Now if you want to know how to create the “story” on your timeline, then hop over to Brian Moran’s free videos, he explains it much better and gives you a sample and some free pdfs on how to use Facebook Timeline to structure your fan page so that you gain maximum exposure to your products or services.

Thanks for this info Nicky, I’ll have to check out Brian’s videos and see what he offers. Like you, I didn’t even change mine until the night before and have not had time to mess with any of the tabs. Have been trying to decide which direction I want to head so getting more information on this will be extremely helpful.

I appreciate you sharing this with us and I’m bookmarking this to study later.

Hope you enjoyed Easter with your family and are looking forward to a productive week.

    Take care,

    Thank you Nicky,

I certainly could use this type of info. I know that I really have to organize my facebook pages and understanding about all that much better than I do at the moment, will certainly help.

Thanks for taking the mystery out of this, Nicky. I need to go over to Brian’s videos and check them out. I know that things on the Internet are ever changing, but sure wish FB had just left well enough alone.

Oh well, off to learn and adapt yet again!

I love how you mentioned “story telling”. Some of the best stories told are some from the best companies out there. How they started, where they got their first beginnings etc. Its what helps people connect and relate to a particular brand or person. I just had my cover done and it’s a slice of my personality and what I do during the day. This was some great information Nicky!

I have to admit I’m one of “those people” who are not really convinced about this Timeline thing. It’s there – we have to use it – but what’s going to be the end result? I’ve read so many conflicting things on the matter. In one story, engagement is up by thousands of percents. In another story, engagement tanked. So here is my opinion: Timeline doesn’t matter… YOU matter. If you and/or your brand/company is good at getting people interested and involved, then you can do that with Timeline, without Timeline and anywhere in between. All I know is the switch made a whole lot of work for me! I’m still wading through some client pages, those apps are a pain and a half to change sometimes. No doubt we’ve all got to work on getting in front of our fans, and that never changes!

Yes it is certainly an “on-going” learning curve with facebook isn’t it? – Just when you think you have it sussed and that it is safe to write an e-book about how to use it…….!!

Yes, you and me both Adrienne – I previously gave quite a bit of attention to facebook and my fan pages, but I am getting a little tired of updating my e-book and videos !! That will teach me to pick a topic that is likely to change so much !!

I did have a good Easter, but sadly it won’t be a productive week as the children are off for 2 weeks which always cripples my productivity, but we do have fun! We are off looking for a puppy for the next couple of days – something else that will no doubt sap my time, but it’s all good fun!

Hope you had a good break too Adrienne and thanks as ever for stopping by,

Mine had lots of “kinks” too Donna and I am in two minds as to whether to focus on this intently at the moment – there is always so much to do!

Brian certainly knows his stuff and has now generated over 185k fans and done over $1.2m in sales in just one year, so maybe I will follow his course!

Oh… I hear you Bob – I did too as I had just got the hang of it all and still (hate to admit it) but can’t quite get my head around the new layout of the pages. Still change is good I guess – well okay, change is inevitable but not necessarily always good……. – we just have to adapt our marketing accordingly. It’s all there to keep us on our toes!

That’s interesting you say that Carol as I know you are quite the expert on social media – I have to say I agree with you and yes ultimately it is about marketing and therefore tweaking our marketing strategies to suit the environment.

Will be interesting to see how this goes……!
Thanks for your views and good luck with all the client pages to sort out – that will keep you busy!

    Hot topic indeed!

I am in the leave Facebook alone club Nicky lol.. However there is nothing we can do but deal and find new ways.

I took the plunge a few days before the updats were going to happen and I think for me the most thing I will miss is the fan gates. That was really beneficial to get new fans and leads.

Looks as though Facebook wants us to purchase ppc to get fans now tho and that could be because they went public. Not sure.

What are your thoughts on that?

This is a great post and it did open my eyes a bit. I am definitely going to look at the resources that you provided. Thanks so much Nicky for sharing!

Hi Nicky, Timeline for pages is one of the best changes Facebook has made in a long time. Since I switched to Timeline, I’m seeing more engagement on my page and I’ve even seen in increase in affiliate sales from the tabs I created with a Facebook app called Lujure.
My favorite thing about the latest change is that I don’t need to keep switching back and forth between profile and page if I don’t want to. I can easily access all of the people who have liked my page and send them friend requests. That alone has me hooked. Thanks for sharing the link to Brian’s video. He always shares great tips for Facebook pages.

Haha – I know exactly what you mean April – they are just making so many changes it’s hard to keep up !!

The fan gates do actually still work, but from what I understand the “fans” are no longer what Facebook is looking for – they are looking for “shares” to ascertain how important your content is and then they will show your page to more people, but there is lots to be done in terms of driving traffic to your tabs, and of course to your offers. 😉

I am certainly hearing very mixed thoughts from people Ileane, so I am glad that you are making full use of the Timeline and enjoying it!

I agree about the fans to friends being a much easier task than it was before, and I also like the way we can personalise the tabs, but I have to say I am struggling with the overall layout – just taking a little time to get used to as the posts seem to be all over the place now!

Thanks for stopping by Ileane and I will be checking out your post about building your apps with Lujure!

    Hi Cat
Sorry took me a while to respond – the kids are STILL off and now been offline with no broadband for 3 days due to a fault on the line!! Hey ho!!

Like you, I am getting used to Timeline although the biggest thing for me was just to get used to the layout – i liked the posts all underneath each other before, and now they are all over the place, left to right! Haha what does that say about me, if that’s the only thing I have to worry about!!

Right, I’m hopping over to your post now to read more about it 😉
    Thanks for stopping by Cat,

Oh I hear you Andrew – I can’t say that I was a fan either to start with and left it to the very last minute before I made the change. Now that I have got used to it a bit, I can definitely see the benefits, but I’m still not a lover of the rather sporadic layout!

    We just have to adapt!

So sorry Sonia – somehow this comment ended up in my spam queue and I have no idea why! Anyway, yes story telling is very powerful and Mr facebook has of course plugged into that and updated accordingly. This will mean marketers need to learn how to tell their marketing story using their timeline. Powerful stuff, but I just hope that’s it for changes to fb for a while!

The power of facebook is enormous and you should never ignore this power, as it can make a real difference in the lead generation procedure. So it is better for you and your business also to use facebook in its own way.
