MLM scripts are great to give you some ideas when you start out, so I’m here to help you out with one for when someone asks you what it is that you do for a living!
Just a word of caution here – Please ensure that you never sound like you are reading MLM scripts when you are talking to a prospect on the phone – it sounds awful!
So you’re at a social event, maybe a dinner party or a drinks evening and you start chatting with someone you know who introduces you to someone else and then the person you know gets called away. You know the deal, you’re left standing there having to make polite conversation with someone whom you know nothing about.
Well for some people this is their worst nightmare so you immediately resort to horrendous topics of conversation such as ……. “the weather”, or ANYTHING that you might possibly have in common. For many the next best thing they can think of to ask someone is “What do you do?”
So what on earth should you say when someone says that?
Your first instinct might be to give a 20 minute business opportunity pitch, (and actually if you really dislike this new person, then this is a GREAT way to get them running for the door!) – your second instinct might be to ramble something about working from home, great business with a great compensation plan and would they like to see it. (Which might also get them backing off).
So there’s two points to note here:
1) Social is social – keep it as social as possible
2) Don’t pitch – Ever!
So what should you say in this situation?
Now I’m not saying don’t ever bring up “work” when you are in a social occasion – just understand that a quick discussion can lead to a swap of business cards, a follow up call and then moving on to start a conversation with someone else.
It’s what we do – and if you’re not – you should be, regardless of whether you are building your business online or offline.
So back to MLM Scripts and what to say when someone asks you that question.
Here’s what I say.
“Well you know how the economy is really bad right now and people are really struggling with working long hours for less pay or reduced savings and pensions”
(This is usually accompanied by a nod of agreement from your new friend.)
“Well what I do, is I help people set up their own business from the comfort of their own home, to earn an additional income without compromising their work or other commitments – Tell me, what is it that you do?”
Now, do you see what’s happened here?
I have left my companion feeling curious, wanting to know more, but I have changed the focus away from me and now I want to know if there is a need, or desire from him with what he has going on in his life.
My business is not about ME – it’s about who I can help with the opportunity and the leadership I can show them. If there is no need or desire for what I have to offer, then I will just ask for a referral – “Do you know of anyone who would really like to work from home and earn an extra income?”.
But if the conversation then continues with them telling me what they do, I will delve deeper by asking questions about their lifestyle – plenty of nodding of agreement when they mention something that is painful in their life (and take mental notes) – then when you have ascertained a need or desire for what you have, explain that you need to go and socialise, but you think you may have something that could interest him and that could end the “pain” that they were talking about – swap cards and arrange a follow up call.

Write out and practice your own MLM Scripts until you know it off by heart so that you can use it the next time you are in this situation.
